Social media is always changing and updating, so keeping up to date is vital for your business. Instagram has made massive changes over the past couple of years and has definitely stepped up their game. Here are 2 of their newest updates they’ve made in 2018 and how you can use them for your business.


1 – Instagram Shopping

Online shopping has now been made easier for both businesses and Instagram users. If you have a Facebook business page and an Instagram business page, you are able to tag products and link them to your website. It’s quite simple really, if you see a product you like and the page has the ‘shop’ feature, all you have to do is tap onto the shop button!

Once someone taps on a tag on your post, they’ll see an image of the product from your post, a description of the product, the cost, and a direct link to the website.

If you’re a business with products to sell, you may as well get onto Instagram!

By doing so, your products can be seen by a wider audience, as there are hundreds of millions of active users on the platform per day. It makes shopping quicker and more efficient for customers because by using this feature, customers can see the product they like from your Instagram feed and if interested, buy it straight away rather than see the product, go find your website, then find the product, then add to cart, then buy.

Before you implement this, make sure that you:

  • Have the latest version of the app
  • Have a converted business account
  • Be an admin
  • Have a shop on Facebook or a product catalogue within Business Manager

With this update being very new, unfortunately, the feature is only available in certain countries being the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Brazil. So if you’re not in any of these countries you won’t be able to use Instagram shop.


2 – Hashtags and profile links to bio

The latest update also turns profile usernames and hashtags within your bio into clickable hyperlinks. Whenever you include a ‘@’ or ‘#’, it will automatically create a link so visitors can visit that profile or a hashtag. But, including hashtags to your profile does NOT make your profile searchable within those hashtags, so it is best to stick to using your own branded/business hashtags in your profile bio. If your username gets linked in someone else’s profile you will receive a notification. It’s a great idea because your name and profile will have more visibility and it allows their followers to follow you.

By building relationships with influencers, you can get them to include your profile inside their bio which could mean more traffic for you.
